Why do we form emotional attachments toJewellery?
We believe that a client`s jewellery is not just a “piece of metal, a stone or a watch”. When a ring is passed down through generations, or a bracelet gifted on a special birthday, it carries emotions far beyond its material value. Across many cultures and generations, people form deep emotional connections with the jewellery they own, because it is tied to a memory, a loved one, an identity or an occasion.
Because jewellery is often work close to the body, the connection to those memories and important moments become so much more. The physical reminders of experiences we hold dear and never wish to forget. These items of jewellery, might in some case be the only tangible item left from a loved one or an experience, hence making it so much more important.
Jewellery often also plays a powerful role in expressing identity. We often choose items of jewellery that reflect our personality, culture, beliefs, or style. Some people wear minimalist designs to express elegance and simplicity, while others prefer bold statement pieces that reflect confidence and individuality. Religious symbols, birthstones, and cultural ornaments can also represent heritage and personal values, making jewellery deeply personal.
Jewellery can also provide comfort and continuity during times of change. People often wear sentimental pieces during difficult moments because they create a feeling of connection and reassurance. A locket containing a loved one’s photo or a ring worn daily for years can become part of a person’s emotional routine, offering stability and familiarity. Memorial jewellery containing ashes is becoming more popular and again this gives the wearer some comfort and a connection to their loved one who may have passed.
When we inspect an item of jewellery that has come in for cleaning and/or restoration, we can often “read” little signs that tell us about the age of the item, how it may have been worn or in some cases, never been worn. Every scratch faded or tarnished detail, dent or engraving represents a time or a chapter in someone’s life. Our clients love to relate stories about their items of jewellery and often, these stories are told with love and emotion.
So, we should therefore never assume that an item of jewellery has no or little value, because to the owner it is priceless.
